A lesson on the importance of reading in the Christian life, taught by Alex DiPrima at Trinity Church Kennesaw’s Men’s Breakfast on 8/8/26.
In this talk, Alex DiPrima makes the case that it is good for Christians to be readers of good books. Beginning with Christianity’s identity as a word-based, text-centered faith, DiPrima explains how reading disciplines the mind, cultivates wisdom and knowledge, connects Christians to the intellectual inheritance of Christian and Western civilization, and equips believers to better understand God and His world. Along the way, he draws from Scripture and writers such as Neil Postman, J.I. Packer, J.C. Ryle, Francis Bacon, and Dostoevsky while addressing modern challenges posed by screens, short-form media, and artificial intelligence. The talk concludes with practical advice for becoming a better reader: set achievable goals, make reading a habit, seek out the best books, read across genres, join reading communities, and discuss what you read with others. Above all, DiPrima emphasizes that reading is not an end in itself but a means of cultivating wisdom, godliness, and a mind better equipped to love and serve God.
