In this exposition of Romans 1:8–17, Dave Comeau examines what is inside a person who has been truly gripped by the gospel. Rather than focusing primarily on practical evangelism techniques, Comeau looks to the Apostle Paul and identifies three qualities that fueled his eagerness to make Christ known: sanctified ambition, a God-given sense of obligation, and an unashamed conviction that the gospel is the power of God for salvation. Paul’s prayers, longings, and desire to strengthen the church reveal a life increasingly aligned with God’s saving purposes, while his obligation to Greeks and barbarians reflects the church’s own Great Commission calling to bring good news to all people. Comeau emphasizes that Christians need not be impressive or naturally gifted evangelists, because God deliberately displays His power through weak messengers proclaiming the seemingly weak message of Christ crucified and risen. When believers become convinced of the gospel’s power and increasingly love Christ and the lost, fear can give way to eagerness and expectation that God will use ordinary Christians to make Jesus known.
